An Award-Winning Estate Landscape in Cazadero
At Equinox Landscape, we specialize in creating landscapes that are not only beautiful but also harmonious with their natural surroundings. This stunning estate, a recipient of the prestigious 2013 California Landscape Contractors Association (CLCA) award, stands as a testament to our commitment to sustainable and innovative landscape design and build. Our goal was to transform the property in Cazadero into a self-sustaining ecosystem that coexists peacefully with the surrounding forest.

The Design & Features
To bring this vision to life, our landscape design and build team focused on a holistic, eco-conscious approach that integrated practical sustainability with natural beauty. Every element was carefully selected to minimize environmental impact and maximize ecological benefit. Key features of this award-winning project include:
- Water Conservation: A sophisticated system of water-catching ponds and a graywater system from the house were implemented to significantly reduce reliance on municipal water. This innovative approach ensures that the landscape remains lush and vibrant using recycled water, naturally.
- Native & Edible Plantings: The garden features a diverse array of native plants that thrive in the local climate, requiring minimal care and providing essential habitat for local wildlife. We also incorporated a variety of edible plants and fruit trees, allowing the homeowners to enjoy a bountiful, seasonal harvest right in their backyard.
- Permeable Surfaces & Natural Boulders: We used permeable surfaces for pathways and patios, which allow rainwater to seep into the ground naturally, recharging the local aquifer and preventing runoff. The landscape is also dotted with beautiful, locally sourced natural boulders, which add a rugged, organic feel while serving as strategic hardscape elements.
- Wildlife Habitat: The thoughtful design and sustainable elements have created a flourishing habitat that attracts a wide range of local wildlife, including deer, foxes, birds, bees, and butterflies from the nearby forest. It is a living, breathing testament to how landscape design can enhance biodiversity.
The Outcome
The result is a functional, beautiful, and ecologically responsible landscape that continues to flourish years after its completion. This project in Cazadero not only provides a tranquil and abundant space for our clients but has also been publicly recognized for its excellence in sustainable design. The 2013 CLCA award serves as a proud reminder of our team’s ability to create landscapes that are both aesthetically remarkable and deeply respectful of the environment.
