Trione-Annadel State Park in eastern Santa Rosa is comprised of more than 5,000 acres of varied terrain: boulder-strewn hillsides, oak and mixed conifer forests, grasslands, wildflowers, creeks and lakes. When one of our clients purchased a second home adjacent to Annadel (known locally by its shortened name), they envisioned a landscape that would mimic the park’s beautiful natural features. We worked with them to capture the essence of Annadel’s rocky terrain and native vegetation—while providing a peaceful haven for people and wildlife alike.

Like the neighboring park, this approximately 1.5-acre property is rocky and steep in many areas. Our goal was to design and build the landscaping for the upper half-acre near the house, with the rest of the downhill land remaining wild.
Existing boulders on the property were hauled up and placed in ways that give shape and definition to the new landscape. The rustic, natural rocks blend seamlessly into the surrounding environment. They also provide habitat for lichens, moist underground shelter for garden-friendly worms and insects, and sitting spots for quiet contemplation.

Before (above): The front yard lacked cohesiveness, with overgrown shrubbery and tired vegetation.

After, above: Contoured berms, re-arranged boulders and a fresh palette of California native and Mediterranean-climate plants create a welcoming space.

What was a rocky depression in the front yard that led to a storm drain, is now a spacious rain garden planted primarily with California natives and other climate-adapted species. The garden allows for rain to soak into the water table, and any excess flows down to Annadel rather than into the storm drain. We also re-built the bridge and sidewalk out of concrete, harmonizing the overall look.

Equinox’s team did all the hardscaping design and installation: concrete work, wood construction, boulder placement. The concrete steps and landing, above, were built over the top of huge boulders, a complex job requiring drilling directly into the rock. We then built the wooden stairs and cable railing that lead to the swimming pool and patio.

(Before and after, above): Our client desired a vegetable garden and sitting space that could be protected from the many wild-roaming deer and turkeys. Given the challenges of fencing large swaths of steep, rocky terrain, we opted to build an enclosed arbor area made with eco-friendly manufactured lumber and animal-resistant fencing. The lighter-weight beams use less wood and are easier to transport and install. Our client loves to spend time in their garden, watching the wildlife that are free to wander the rest of the grounds. The fountain, made from a re-purposed millstone, provides soothing ambience to the space. (Two more views, below:)

Many new plants were installed, and required bird-proof netting while getting established. Turkeys don’t necessarily eat the plants, but they can dig around and uproot them in search of grubs and insects. The bluestone pathway leads to a cosy sitting space.
