A Modern-Rustic Sanctuary in Santa Rosa
At Equinox Landscape, we believe that the most beautiful gardens are those that feel perfectly at home in their natural surroundings. This Native Boulder Landscape project in Santa Rosa is a testament to our philosophy. Our design transformed a challenging, sloped property into a multi-functional sanctuary by masterfully blending the rugged beauty of native boulders with clean, modern architectural elements. The goal was to create a landscape that was both a peaceful retreat and a highly functional space for daily living and entertaining.
The Design & Features
To bring this vision to life, our landscape design and build team focused on a hybrid approach, using natural materials as the foundation for modern structures. This project showcases a cohesive design where every element serves a purpose—from defining spaces to managing the property’s grade. Key features of this project include:
- Extensive Use of Native Boulders: The landscape is defined by the strategic placement of large, native boulders. We used these monolithic stones to create natural retaining walls, to frame garden beds, and as artistic, sculptural focal points. Their presence instantly grounds the design, making the entire space feel authentic and timeless.
- Modern Hardscape & Pathways: To contrast the organic feel of the stone, we incorporated clean, modern hardscape elements. Poured concrete pathways and patios provide smooth, durable surfaces for circulation. The staircase features a sleek combination of wooden treads and contemporary metal railings, which provides safe access while adding a striking, architectural detail.
- Custom Wooden Structures: We designed and built several custom wooden structures to add both function and visual interest. A large pergola with a clear roof creates a shaded seating area. A separate wooden a-frame structure provides a frame for a fire pit, and a custom gate and fencing system with a matching wooden structure defines and encloses a specific area, possibly a dog run or a garden.
The Outcome
The result is a harmonious and multi-functional landscape that beautifully navigates a difficult site. This Native Boulder Landscape is a perfect example of our ability to create a truly unique outdoor environment in Santa Rosa. It demonstrates how a thoughtful blend of modern and natural elements can produce a space that is both visually stunning and deeply connected to its surroundings.
