An Edible, Artful Outdoor Dining Experience in Sonoma

The “Living Table” project, located in the heart of Sonoma is a perfect example of our landscape design and build capabilities, transforming a simple dining area into an extraordinary, interactive centerpiece. This unique garden was designed and built to create the ultimate outdoor dining experience—one that is both beautiful and bountiful. The goal was to seamlessly integrate a living ecosystem into a functional piece of furniture, blurring the line between a dining table and a vibrant, flourishing garden.
The Design & Features
To bring this vision to life, our landscape design and build team employed a sophisticated combination of horticultural and engineering principles. The centerpiece is a large dining table that features a built-in garden bed. Using green roof technology, we created a self-sustaining environment that supports a diverse array of edible and ornamental plants. Key features of this project include:
- Edible Centerpiece: The table is covered in a lush tapestry of herbs, lettuces, grasses, and succulents, providing fresh ingredients and a beautiful, ever-changing backdrop for every meal.
- Artful Water Feature: Two striking basalt sculptures serve as the head of a closed-loop water feature. Water flows gracefully across the length of the table, naturally irrigating the plants before being funneled into a hidden, underground recirculation system. This design ensures minimal water waste and adds a soothing, ambient sound to the dining experience.
- Integrated Design: Every element was carefully chosen to complement the natural surroundings and create a cohesive, peaceful atmosphere that invites guests to linger and connect with nature.
The Outcome
The result is a functional work of art that has been celebrated for its innovation and beauty. This project not only provides a one-of-a-kind space for our clients to enjoy with friends and family but has also garnered significant recognition within the industry. It has been featured in several prestigious magazines and was even included in the renowned Sunset Western Garden book.
