Revisiting a Redwood Paradise

Revisiting a Redwood Paradise

Guerneville, in western Sonoma County, is home to a landscape we designed and installed 10 years ago. A decade later in 2024, our client wanted to upgrade their property, especially the many original hardscaping features. We worked with them to re-imagine their surroundings and bring a fresh, new look to their outdoor spaces. They’re thrilled with the results, and are looking forward to the second phase of the project to install new plantings this coming spring. Here are some highlights of this newly designed piece of paradise in the redwoods.

Soldano long driveway Before

(Before, above left and right): The property sits on sloping land, studded with redwoods, lush vegetation and steep embankments. The long driveway entrance was in need of new asphalt and a retaining wall.

(After, two different views above): We decided to go with locally sourced boulders, which were not only a better aesthetic fit for the natural surroundings, but were a third of the cost of a traditional concrete wall. Small 2-watt LED lights were embedded in the asphalt to light up the boulders, yet are dim enough to preserve dark skies.

Soldano circular driveway before

(Before): The old circular driveway was covered in gravel and river rocks….

…and the plantings surrounding the fountain needed replacing.

Soldano driveway pavers

(After): The spacious circular driveway is now surfaced with the clean lines of concrete pavers, and soon new plants will surround the fountain.

Soldano front steps

Another cost-saving measure we took was to apply a new overlayment to the existing cracked front concrete steps, giving them new life without having to replace them.

(Under construction, left and completed, right): A contemplative raised gravel patio in the back of the property includes a stained wooden privacy screen to block views of the neighboring home. Running alongside the area is a river rock-lined rain garden/seasonal creek, which directs rooftop runoff into the earth to recharge the water table. Note the monolithic bluestone steps and stepping stones.

We built a new deck that includes an outdoor kitchen and fire pit. Downlighting along the wall is not only practical, but adds a dramatic flair.
