What makes a landscape go from ordinary to outstanding? There are lots of answers to this question, but one of the key elements to exceptional landscape design is the art of selecting and installing the right building materials.
Hardscaping, or the built environment in your outdoor space, includes pathways, steps, raised beds, trellises, patios, decks and planters. It sets the stage and provides the framework for the plants in your garden. What to consider when selecting these materials?
Limit the number of materials to avoid busyness. Whether choosing similar or contrasting materials, more is not necessarily better. Too many competing textures, colors, shapes and sizes can make your garden feel chaotic.

Stick to a consistent palette. A harmonized color and texture palette creates a sense of cohesion and elegance. Earthy flagstone patio and rock walls, or stained concrete in bold colors? Yes to one or the other, but not both. Or work with scale in similar colors: find an appealing rock type, and go from boulder to stone, to gravel and sand.
Consider your ecological footprint. Using local materials that don’t require long-distance hauling cuts greenhouse gas emissions. Reusing rocks and boulders on your land is even better. Think about permeable pavers that allow rainwater to soak back into the soil. Ask about salvaged or sustainably harvested lumber for your fencing or deck. Apply water-based stains and low-VOC paints whenever feasible.
Look at the big picture. Notice your home’s architectural style, existing building materials and colors. What about your surrounding environment? Are you on a hill with sweeping views, in a wooded valley, or in a densely populated neighborhood? Your surroundings will help inform your choice of components to make your outdoor space beautiful, harmonious and serene.
